I decided one of the most important investments at the start of my photography journey was mentorships. I knew investing into someone who has been successful in the same niche would give me a head start! I researched many talented photographers, but I really wanted to find someone driving distance. I wanted to get to know great spots near me, but also having the opportunity to connect with that photographer more often.
I found Valory who is very talented and I could tell then, even though she was only about a 1-2 years into her business, she was very successful! I knew I could learn a good amount from her, and I did! I traveled to her hometown, Redding. We met at From the Hearth Cafe to grub and have a q&a (bomb food!). First impression, she is gorgeous and has a super friendly personality. 😉 I loved hearing about her journey, especially how she made all of her progress in her business (guess what mentorship was a big part of it!). I learned new things about instagram, business tools, some tax tips lol, and overall business process. Seriously, probably wouldn’t have figured these things out for a while.
Next, we drove off to do our shoot at Whiskey Town Lake. SO BEAUTIFUL! Valory definitely chose the perfect couple. They were so good lookin’ and the perfect vibe. I learned some fun new poses and new camera techniques as we were going along. Now to my favorite part…the water. *Backstory: Valory shot here before and the water was low so there was a nice hill of rocks. Well that was totally underwater when we went to go shoot.* Here we are all getting into the water…yesss. Thankfully, it was refreshingly cool because as the shoot went on Valory and I ended up getting waste deep in that water! At that point I realized I should have brought a swimsuit…in fact we all should have because I would have loved to swim in it. Oh, but the moments we captured in that water were magical!
Finally, we went to Valory’s abode (her roommate had the cutest kitten!) and worked on some editing. She showed me how she used her presets and all the tips and tricks she does to get the final product gorgeous! After purchasing 2 sets of presets and having them not work very well, I was holding back on purchasing anymore but, Annie Graham presets were 3rd on my list. Guess what? Valory used those same presets and said she had the same experience, but Annie Grahams were so easy to tweak and perfect for her style. After I saw the magic of her presets I got them and they are a game changer! So, happy with them.
Final words. I am so thankful I did this mentorship with Valory. I learned a ton and have implemented many tools into my business right away and can already see myself taking bigger steps towards my dream. This experience has fed my ‘passion fire’ well and has given me a boost in my journey. I cannot wait to keep going on more adventures in my business and work with Valory in the near future.
